In 1993, the U.S. government instituted a requirement that all room air conditioners sold in the United States must have an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 10 or higher. The EER is defined as the ratio of the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, measured in British thermal units per hour, or Btu/h, to its electrical power requirement in watts. (a) Convert the EER of 10.0 to dimensionless form, using the conversion 1 Btu = 1 055 J. (b) What is the appropriate name for this dimensionless quantity? (c) In the 1970s, it was common to find room air conditioners with EERs of 5 or lower. State how the operating costs compare for 10 000-Btu/h air conditioners with EERs of 5.00 and 10.0. Assume each air conditioner operates for 1 500 h during the summer in a city where electricity costs 17.0¢ per kWh.

- The average life expectancy in Japan is 81 years. What is this time in SI units?arrow_forwardThe quantity of energy Q transferred by heat conduction through an insulating pad in time interval Δt is described by Q/Δt = κAΔT/d, where κ is the thermal conductivity of the material, A is the face area of the pad (perpendicular to the direction of heat flow), ΔT is the difference in temperature across the pad, and d is the thickness of the pad. In one trial to test material as lining for sleeping bags, 86.0 J of heat is transferred through a 3.40-cm-thick pad when the temperature on one side is 37.0°C and on the other side is 2.00°C. In a trial of the same duration with the same temperatures, how much heat will be transferred when more of the material is added to form a pad with the same face area and total thickness 8.41 cm?arrow_forwardWhen the temperature of a metal cylinder is raised from 0.0°C to 87.0°C, its length increases by 0.20%.
