To discuss:
The site and roles of respiratory centers in the brainstem, their connections with each other and with CNS, and the routes of CNS output to respiratory muscles.
Introduction:
The respiratory system is a group of organs which are mainly involved in the exchange of gases. Organs such as the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs carry out respiration. Respiration is a process of inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide. The central nervous system plays a key role in the process of respiration. The brainstem lies in the posterior part of the brain, which includes the mid brain, pons, and medulla oblongata. The principle roles of the brainstem are to regulate breathing and heart rate.
