WHAT IF? Consider two species that diverged while geographically separated but resumed contact before reproductive isolation was complete. Predict what would happen over time if the two species mated indiscriminately and (a) hybrid offspring survived and reproduced more poorly than offspring from intraspecific matings or (b) hybrid offspring survived and reproduced as well as offspring from intraspecific matings.

- WHAT IF? Imagine two populations of a fish species, one in the Mediterranean Sea and one in the CaribbeanSea. Now imagine two scenarios: (1) The populationsbreed separately, and (2) adults of both populationsmigrate yearly to the North Atlantic to interbreed. Whichscenario would result in a greater loss of genetic diversityif the Mediterranean population were harvestedto extinction? Explain your answer.arrow_forwardWHAT IF? In the deserts of New Mexico, the soils aremostly sandy, with occasional regions of black rockderived from lava flows that occurred about 1,000 yearsago. Mice are found in both sandy and rocky areas, andowls are known predators. What might you expect aboutcoat color in these two mouse populations? Explain. Howwould you use this ecosystem to further test the camouflage hypothesis?arrow_forwardWHAT IF? Based on MacArthur and Wilson’s islandequilibrium model, how would you expect the richness ofbirds on islands to compare with the richness of snakesand lizards? Explain.arrow_forward
- Please Help! Q1) Butterflies in Africa (species 1) pollinate just one species of flower with a short corolla reducing the variation in the length of the tongue of its pollinators. Butterflies in Europe (species 2) have variable lengths as they pollinate several different species of flowers. What is the mechanism shaping the length of the tongue in species 1?______ Q2) A variation on what morphological trait made the difference between life and death among all surviving finches in the draught of 1977? Q3: Are individual species more closely related within the same order or within the same family?arrow_forwardWHAT IF? Suppose a molecular clock dates the divergence of two taxa at 80 million years ago, but new fossilevidence shows that the taxa diverged at least 120 millionyears ago. Explain how this could happen.arrow_forward
- WHAT IF? Suppose gene A is orthologous in species 1and species 2, and gene B is paralogous to gene A inspecies 1. Suggest a sequence of two evolutionary eventsthat could result in the following: Gene A differs considerably between species, yet gene A and gene B show littledivergence from each other.arrow_forwardMAke ConneCtIonS Suppose that a sudden changein environmental conditions caused a substantial dropin a population’s carrying capacity. Predict how naturalselection and genetic drift might affect this population.(See Concept 23.3.)arrow_forwardWhat If? Data from additional studies showed that when soapberrybug eggs from a population that fed on balloon vine fruits were then rearedon goldenrain tree fruits (or vice versa), the beak lengths of the adult insectswere most similar to those in the population from which the eggs were initiallyobtained. Interpret these results.arrow_forward

Suppose the digger wasp had returned to her original nest site, despite the pinecones having been moved. What alternative hypotheses mightyou propose regarding how the wasp finds her nest and why the pineconesdidn’t misdirect the wasp?arrow_forward13) Lake Malawi in Africa is home to about 200 species of allopatrically speciated cichlid fish. However, recent development around the lake is reducing the visabiliy in the lake, and as a result recently diverged species are merging back together. Why? A) Because the geneflow between species has been reduced due to the reduction in visability B) Because those species have not evolved a second reproductive isolation mechanism in addition to sexual selection C) Because the open water habitat is no longer as habitable, so the open water species are now using the bottom habitat D) Because the bottom habitat is no longer habitable, so the bottom habitat species are not using the open water habitat, leading to more hybridizationarrow_forward
