Electrolysis is an electrochemical process by which the current passes from one electrode to another in an ionized solution, which is an electrolyte.

Electrolysis of copper involves the transfer of copper atoms from an impure copper anode to a pure copper cathode. The electrolyte is a solution of copper(II) sulfate.

According to the electrochemical series, the metals Ag, Pt, and Au have a higher reduction potential than copper and will get reduced and deposited.

The metals Fe, Zn, Co, and Pb, whose reduction potential is less than copper will not get reduced and remain unaffected.
