Question
Chapter 23, Problem 2CT
Summary Introduction
To explain: The reason why the researchers have been able to use the information about the alleles of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in individuals from different countries to help in tracing the origin of human use of alcoholic beverages.
Introduction: Alcohol is a substance that is psychoactive and it is also the active ingredient in recreational drinks such as wine, beer, and other types of liquor. Alcohol is also highly addictive and it’s over consumption leads to liver failure. The method to produce alcohol varies based on the geographical location and the native fruits of that region.

A television commercial featuring former cyclist Lance Armstrong talked about the possibility of people carrying a DNA genotype card with them that would contain all of the information necessary to predict future diseases. This could, therefore, be used to help prescribe drugs to stop a medical condition before it became apparent. Give a couple of specific examples of how this ability could be used for the benefit or the detriment of humankind.
Explain the following phenomena:
A. In a survey conducted on the population of men aged 60-75 in Japan, who are fed a traditional, rich Japanese dietIn fish, the percentage of men with cardiovascular disease was found to be small compared to Europe.
B. Poor population in Egypt, fed on a low-calorie vegetarian diet, does not suffer from protein deficiencyOr vitamins.
C. A person whose gallbladder has been removed from their body is told to refrain from eating high-fat foods.
D. A defect in the breakdown of proteins is found in a person in whose stomach the level of acidity was measured 1.6 = pH (the normal value is 3.7)
E. In a person with a certain disease in which the brush border cells in the small intestine are damaged, it is found that he suffers Malnutrition.
Are the following examples a description of genetics at the molecular, cellular, organismal, or populational level?
A. People with cystic fibrosis have lung problems due to a buildup of mucus in their lungs
B. The mutant CF gene encodes a chloride transporter that doesn't
transport chloride ions very well.
C. A defect in the chloride transporter causes a salt imbalance in lung cells.

You observe that most of the pocket mice that live on dark rocks are dark black in coloration, and that the pocket mice that are light in color live on light-colored sand. You hypothesize that the coloration differences serve as camouflage protecting the mice against predators. Design an experiment to test your hypothesis. Describe this experiment in 3-4 sentences. In this description, make sure you indicate the following: dependent variable, independent variable, and your prediction.arrow_forwardBased on literature, the number of genes in the human genome is lower compared to rice but rice have fewer chromosomes and lesser amount of DNA than humans. - Recent studies reveal that certain areas of the DNA are less prone to DNA mutations and that mutations may not be random after all. In a study on Arabidopsis thaliana, important genes that are involved in cell growth and expression have been observed to have low mutation rates. She believes that one needs to combine no snacking with the elimination of carbohydrates in their meals. Please explain how Dr. Vanier may test this hypothesis by describing the research design. Finally, describe what she needs to find (i.e., what type of effect and what it looks like) in the experiment to support her hypothesis. Reproduction is required for both chemical and biological evolution. Both chemical and biological evolution are defined by change over time. Which of the following best describes an actual result you observe form studying the mutation accumulation (MA) lines you created? a. Beneficial mutations occur far less frequently than deleterious mutations do. b. The neutral mutations had a greater effect on fitness compared to other mutation types. c.
