Concept explainers
Marriage Trends It is found that the number of married and single adults in a certain town are subject to the statistics that follow. Suppose that x and y denote the number of married and single adults, respectively, in a given year (say, as of January 1) and let m and s denote the corresponding numbers for the following year. Then,
(a) Write this system of equations in matrix form.
(b) Solve the resulting matrix equation for
(c) Suppose that, in a given year, there were found to be 100,000 married adults and 50,000 single adults. How many married and single adults were there the preceding year?
(d) How many married and single adults were there two years ago?

- Distribution of Cash An ATM at a bank in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, dispenses $20 and $50 bills. Brodie withdraws $600 from this machine and receives a total of 18 bills. Let x be the number of $20 bills and y the number of $50 bills that he receives. (a) Find a system of two linear equations in x and y that express the information given in the problem. (b) Write your linear system as a matrix equation of the form AX=B . (c) Find A1 , and use it to solve your matrix equation in part (b). How many bills of each type did Brodie receive?arrow_forward(a) Write the following system as a matrix equation AX=B . (b) The inverse of A is (c) The solution of the matrix equation is X=A1B . (d) The solution of the system is x = ____, y = ____.arrow_forwardOne hundred liters of a 50% solution is obtained by mixing a 60% solution with a 20% solution. Use a system of linear equations to determine how many liters of each solution are required to obtain the desired mixture. Solve the system using matrices.arrow_forward
