Chapter 24, Problem 17P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Meaning of the statement that an oxygen atom from the side chain of glutamate is transferred to the orthophosphate group in the reaction catalyzed by glutamine synthetase.

Concept introduction:

Amino acid synthesis is the biochemical process by which amino acids are synthesized. Organisms are not able to synthesize all amino acids. Humans can synthesize only 11 amino acids out of the 20 amino acids. These amino acids are termed as the non-essential amino acids, and the remaining amino acids are termed as the essential amino acids.

Just Arrange.  The enzyme serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT) requires pyridoxal phosphate (PLP) as a cofactor. Arrange the steps of the likely mechanism for SHMT‑catalyzed serine degradation (producing glycine and N5,N10‑methylenetetrahydrofolate)
Crohn’s disease. Omega-3 fatty acids have been tested asa means to prevent relapse of Crohn’s disease. Two large, randomized, placebo-controlled studies have shown nosuch benefit from omega-3 fatty acids. Suppose you areasked to design an experiment to further study this claim.Imagine that you have collected data on Crohn’s relapsesin subjects who have used these omega-3 fatty acids and similar subjects who have not used them and that you canmeasure incidences of relapse for these subjects. Statethe null and alternative hypotheses you would use in yourstudy.
Instructions. Given each set of information which may include common name(s) and the reaction catalyzed, you are required to identify the main class of the specific enzyme described. Name: citryl-CoA synthetase Reaction: ATP + citrate + CoA = ADP + phosphate + (3S)-citryl-CoA Name: D-xylulose reductase Reaction: xylitol + NAD+ = D-xylulose + NADH + H+ Name: cellobiose phosphorylase Reaction: cellobiose phosphate = α-D-glucose 1-phosphate + D-glucose Name: carbonic anhydrase Reaction: H2CO3 = CO2 + H2O Other info: The enzyme catalyzes the reversible hydration of gaseous CO2 to carbonic acid, which dissociates to give hydrogencarbonate above neutral pH. Name: pantoate activating enzyme Reaction: ATP + (R)-pantoate = AMP + diphosphate + (R)-pantothenate.
