Question
Chapter 24, Problem 24.13QP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: How nematic, smectic and cholesteric liquid crystals are similar and different has to be described.
Concept Introduction:
- Liquid crystal exhibits both the properties of liquids (particles are not arranged and are free to move in all directions) and solids (articles are arranged regularly).
- Liquid crystals are anisotropic, that is it shows different properties in different directions based on the orientation of particles in it.
- Isotropic have no orderly arrangement and molecules are free to move in all direction whereas, anisotropic have orderly arrangement of particles and its property differ with the direction of orientation.
- Liquid crystal can be classified into different types based on their behaviour and physical structure, namely nematic, smectic and cholesteric.
