Chapter 24.1, Problem 1PPB
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The structure for monomer used to produce the given polymethylmethacrylate should be drawn.

Concept Introduction:

Polymers: Polymers are macromolecules which are formed a by number of repeating units called monomers.

Monomer: A molecule is considered as monomer when this molecule bonds with another identical molecule which results to form polymer.

Based on the techniques involved polymers are classified as addition and condensation polymer.

Addition polymer is formed when the monomers undergoes addition reaction. These polymers are formed when the bonds in monomers undergoes rearrangement without loss of atom/molecule. This addition reaction takes place under pressure, heat or in presence of some catalyst.

1. Kevlar is a copolymer used in bullet-proof vests. It is formed in a condensation reaction between the following two monomers: H2N- -NH2 НО—С OH Sketch a portion of the polymer chain showing several monomer units. Write the overall equation for the condensation reaction.
When two monomers (X and Y) are polymerized together, a copolymer results. An alternating copolymer is formed when the two monomers X and Y alternate regularly in the polymer chain. Draw the structure of the alternating copolymer formed when the two monomers, CH2 ≡ CCl2 and CH2 = CHC6H5, are polymerized together.
The polyester poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is produced through the condensation polymerization of a dialcohol with a diacid. Using the given molecular formulas, determine the structure of each monomer. dialcohol: C2H6O diacid: C8H6O4
