Interpretation:

The method for the preparation of fatty acid for catabolism is to be stated and the location in the cell where fatty acid activation takes place is to be identified.

Concept introduction:

The β-oxidation is a pathway in which fatty acids are broken down into molecules of acyl CoA. Fatty acids that enter tissue cells cannot be oxidized to produce energy until they pass through the mitochondrial membrane. This cannot occur until the fatty acid is converted into fatty acyl CoA by reaction with coenzyme A.

Explanation of Solution

The fatty acid reacts with the coenzyme A to form fatty acyl CoA. This reaction is catalyzed by acyl CoA synthetase and it takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell. The energy needed for the synthesis comes from the hydrolysis of ATP
