Saliva helps to moisten the mouth, digestion of a small amount of starch and fat, cleanse the teeth, inhibits bacterial growth, dissolves molecules to stimulate taste buds, lubricate foods, and aid in swallowing. Saliva contains majorly water and other solutes like salivary amylase, lingual lipase, mucus, lysozyme, immunoglobulin A and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate salts.
