A constant potential difference of 12 v is maintained between the terminals of a 0.25-μF, parallel-plate, air capacitor, (a) A sheet of Mylar is inserted between the plates of the capacitor, completely filling the space between the plates. When this is done, how much additional charge flows onto the positive plate of the capacitor (see Table 24.1)? (b) What is the total induced charge on cither face of the Mylar sheet? (c) What effect does the Mylar sheet have on the electric field between the plates? Explain how you can reconcile this with the increase in charge on the plates, which acts to increase the electric field.

- If a proton is released from rest in an electric field, will it move in the direction of increasing or decreasing potential? Also answer this question for an electron and a neutron. Explain why.arrow_forwardTwo large, parallel metal plates, each of area A, are oriented horizontally and separated by a distance 3d. A grounded conducting wire joins them, and initially each plate carries no charge. Now a third identical plate carrying charge Q is inserted between the two plates, parallel to them and located a distance d from the upper plate as shown in Figure P20.84. (a) What induced charge appears on each of the two original plates? (b) What potential difference appears between the middle plate and each of the other plates? Figure P20.84arrow_forwardA particle with charge 1.60 1019 C enters midway between two charged plates, one positive and the other negative. The initial velocity of the particle is parallel to the plates and along the midline between them (Fig. P26.48). A potential difference of 300.0 V is maintained between the two charged plates. If the lengths of the plates are 10.0 cm and they are separated by 2.00 cm, find the greatest initial velocity for which the particle will not be able to exit the region between the plates. The mass of the particle is 12.0 1024 kg. FIGURE P26.48arrow_forward
- According to UE=12C(V)2 (Eq. 27.3), a greater capacitance means more energy is stored by the capacitor, but according to UE = Q2/2C (Eq. 27.2), a greater capacitance means less energy is stored. How can both of these equations be correct?arrow_forward(a) Find the potential difference VB required to stop an electron (called a slopping potential) moving with an initial speed of 2.85 107 m/s. (b) Would a proton traveling at the same speed require a greater or lesser magnitude potential difference? Explain. (c) Find a symbolic expression for the ratio of the proton stopping potential and the electron stopping potential, Vp/Ve. The answer should be in terms of the proton mass mp and electron mass me.arrow_forwardRepeat the calculations of the previous problem for a proton with the same kinetic energy.arrow_forward
- Check Your Understanding What is the potential energy of Q relative to the zero reference at infinity at r2 in the above example?arrow_forward(a) What is the final speed of an electron accelerated from rest through a voltage of 25.0 MV by a negatively charged Van de Graff terminal? (b) What is unreasonable about this result? (c) Which assumptions are responsible?arrow_forwardSuppose that the capacitance of a variable capacitor can be manually changed from 100 pF to 800 pF by turning a dial, connected to one set of plates by a shaft from 0° to 180°. With the dial set at 180° (corresponding to C — 800 pF), the capacitor is connected to a 500-V source. After charging, the capacitor is disconnected from the source, and the dial is turned to 0°. If friction is negligible, how much work is required to turn the dial from 180° to 0°?arrow_forward
- The temperature near the center of the Sun is thought to be 15 million degrees Celsius ( 1.5107oC ) (or kelvin). Through what voltage must a singly charged ion be accelerated to have the same energy as the average kinetic energy of ions at this temperature?arrow_forwardConsider a charge Q1(1+5.0C) fixed at a site with another charge Q2 (Charge +3.0C , mass 6.0g ) moving in die neighboring space, (a) Evaluate die potential energy of Q2 when it is 4.0 cm from Q1 (b) If Q2 starts from rest from a point 4.0 cm from Q1what will be its speed when it is 8.0 cm from Q1 ? (Note: Q1 is held fixed in its place.)arrow_forwardA large parallel-plate capacitor is attached to a battery that has terminal potential (Fig. 27.15A). After a period of time, the capacitor stores charge Q so that its top plate is positive and its bottom plate is negative, and the potential difference between the plates is VC = . An I-shaped neutral conductor consisting of two parallel plates connected by a wire is slipped between the plates of the capacitor so that all four plates are parallel (Fig. 27.15B). What are the charges q1, and q2 on the plates of the I-shaped conductor? What is the potential difference VC between the top and bottom plates of the capacitor?arrow_forward
