Chapter 24.1, Problem 5BYGO
Summary Introduction
To analyze:
The name of the serous membrane that suspends the intestine to posterior body walls. Also, the name of the external layer that is formed by an extension of this membrane is to be determined.
Introduction:
The digestive tract is comprised of different layers of tissues such as:
- Mucosa
- Sub-mucosa
- Muscularis
- Serosa or Adventitia
Serosa forms the fourth layer and it has thin connective tissue as well as squamous epithelium. The serous membrane is the membrane that lines the body walls and organs of the abdominal cavity. The presence of these membranes reduces the friction and thereby allowing swift movement of organs.

9 Peritonitis is an infection of the fluid in the peritoneal cavity. Why do you think this condition might be difficult to
treat? Why would this condition have wide-ranging effects on the abdominal organs?
10 Explain how the structures of the epithelium and muscularis of the small intestine, stomach, and esophagus follow
their functions.
All of the following regions / structures demonstrate simple columnar cells (microvilli) with goblet cells EXCEPT for the?
1. middle of the esophagus
2. distal end of the esophagus
3. stomach
4. duodenum
5. jejunum
6. ileum

(B) 1, 2, and 3
(C) only 3
(D) 4 and 5
(E) 5 and 6
Which surgery do you think would have the most profound effect on digestion:
Removal of the stomach (gastrectomy)
Removal of the pancreas (pancreatectomy)
Removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy)
