Case summary:

Mr. H is a 75-year-old male patient, who had recently diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Ms. C is a nurse and she is assigned to take care of Mr. H, during the assessment Ms. C learns Mr. H readiness to learn. While giving preoperative teaching, Ms. C provided Mr. H with teaching brochures for colorectal cancer and what to do before, during, and after the surgery.

Explanation of Solution

The clinical assessment by the nurse suggest that Mr. H is a visual learner, hence the nurse provides Mr. H with DVD educational learning about the colorectal cancer. The nurse also keeps question-and answer session. Other approach such as role play session is also conducted to apply and increase patient knowledge about the disease and things to be done before, during, and after the surgery.

Conclusion

The nurse should follow certain methods while teaching the older patient. The nurse used keep the teaching session short, the patient should be alert and rested, involve the patient in the discussion, and ask questions that enhance patient’s memory.
