Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the lack of optical activity in the 2-chlorobutane after it is examined with a polarimeter is to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Enantiomers are one of the two molecules that are a mirror image of each other and are non-superimposable.
The ability of certain substances to rotate the plane of a plane-polarized light as it passes through a crystal, a liquid, or a solution is known as optical activity.
The rotation of the polarized light could be in clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
If the rotation of the polarized light will be in clockwise, it is dextrorotatory.
If the rotation of the polarized light will be in counterclockwise, it is leavorotatory.
If both the enantiomers are present in same amount, then it is optically inactive.
A scientific instrument thatis used to measure the angle of rotation caused by passing the polarized light through an optically active substance is known as a polarimeter.

- Treatment of -D-glucose with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst converts it into a mixture of two compounds called methyl glucosides (Section 25.3A). In these representations, the six-membered rings are drawn as planar hexagons. (a) Propose a mechanism for this conversion and account for the fact that only the OH on carbon 1 is transformed into an OCH3 group. (b) Draw the more stable chair conformation for each product. (c) Which of the two products has the chair conformation of greater stability? Explain.arrow_forwardClopidogrel is the generic name for Plavix, a drug used to prevent the formation of blood clots in patients that have a history of heart attacks or strokes. A single enantiomer of clopidogrel can be prepared in three steps from the chiral αhydroxy acid A. Identify B and C in the following reaction sequence, and designate the conguration of the enantiomer formed by this route as R or S.arrow_forwardThe cis and trans isomers of 2,3-dimethyloxirane both react with −OH to give butane-2,3-diol. One stereoisomer gives a single achiral product, and one gives two chiral enantiomers. Which epoxide gives one product and which gives two?arrow_forward
- 4-Chloro-2-pentene has a double bond that can have either the E or the Z configuration and a stereogenic center that can have either the R or the S configuration. How many stereoisomers arepossible altogether? Draw the structure of each, and group the pairs of enantiomers.arrow_forwardChemical compound A is an alkene that when treated with ozone followed by treatment of Zn in HOAc produces only (CH3CH2CH2) 2C = O. What is the structure of A? If A is reacted with peroxyacetic acid, what product would be obtained? Write the corresponding structure. Is this substance optically active? Please include a detailed explanation.arrow_forwardDHA is a fatty acid derived from sh oil and an abundant fatty acid in vertebrate brains. Hydrogenation of DHA forms docosanoic acid [CH3(CH2)20CO2H] and ozonolysis forms CH3CH2CHO, CH2(CHO)2 (ve equivalents), and HCOCH2CH2CO2H. What is the structure of DHA if all double bonds have the Z conguration?arrow_forward
- Compound A (C11H23Br) is a secondary alkyl halide. On being heated with a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol, compound A yielded a mixture of two alkenes B and C, each having molecular formula C11H22. Catalytic hydrogenation of the major isomer B or the minor isomer C gave only 3,5-diethylheptane. Draw structures for compounds A, B, and C consistent with these observations.arrow_forwardA compound A, C7H12, was found to be optically active. On catalytic reduction over platinum catalyst, 2 equivalents of hydrogen were absorbed, yielding compound B, C7H16. On ozonolysis of A, two fragments were obtained. One fragment was identified as acetic acid. The other fragment, compound C, was an optically active carboxylic acid, C5H10O2. Write the reactions and draw structures for A, B and C.arrow_forwardClopidogrel is the generic name for Plavix, a drug used to prevent the formation of blood clots in patients that have a history of heart attacks or strokes. - Compound X is optically inactive and has the formula C 16H 16Br 2. On treatment with strong base, X gives hydrocarbon Y, C 16H 14. Compound Y absorbs 2 equivalents of hydrogen when reduced over a palladium catalyst and reacts with ozone to give two fragments. One fragment Z, is an aldehyde with formula C 7H 6O. The other fragment is glyoxal, (CHO)2. Which of the following answers is correct?
