Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The example in which the arrows do not correspond correctly to the repositioning of the electrons needed to arrive at the resonance structure shown is to be identified.
Concept introduction:
Resonance structures are different Lewis structures of thesame molecule.
The atom from which the electron pair migrates either loses a bond pair or a lone pair, while the atom to which the electron pair migrates either gains a bond pair or a lone pair.
The total number of electrons after and before repositioning should be the same.
The rules for drawing resonance structures are as:
Only nonbonding electron pairs and pi electrons can participate in conjugation in the formation of various resonating structures.
The single bonds present in the molecule do not break or form in the resonance structures.
The placement of atoms present in the molecule remains fixed.
The octet of all atoms is completely filled.

- Resonance Forms Question (b) Draw two resonance forms for nitrite ion, NO2−. What can yousay about the geometry of this molecule (linear or bent)? (Hint: Consider the effect of electron repulsion exerted by the lone pair on nitrogen.) (c) The possibility of valence-shell expansion increases the number of feasibleresonance forms, and it is often difficult to decide on one that is “best.” Onecriterion that is used is whether the Lewis structure predicts bond lengths andbond angles with reasonable accuracy. Draw Lewis octet and valence-shellexpanded resonance forms for SO2(OSO). Considering the Lewis structure for SO (Exercise 1-8), its experimental bond length of1.48Å, and the measured S–O distance in SO2 of 1.43Å, which one of the various structures would you consider “best”.
