Chapter 26, Problem 16WIO
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The ethical considerations that make the research on diseases such as migraines and Alzheimer difficult and the limitations of using animals as models to study the nervous system.
Concept introduction:
Nervous system controls and coordinates the functions of body. It communicates through the network of cells and the nerve impulses sent by the neuron cells. The nervous system in the vertebrates is divided into two main divisions, central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.

Galen performed vivisection, or live experimentation, on animals to learn about the nervous system. What did Galen discover with his squealing pig experiment?
A) Galen correctly identified that peripheral nerves could control bodily function
B) Galen correctly identified the division between the central and peripheral nervous systems
C) Galen demonstrated that tendons, ligaments and nerves were separate entities
D) Galen demonstated that transection of individual nerves had little functional consequence.
How would your nervous system respond if you encounter a snake on a hiking trail?
Group of answer choices
The parasympathetic nervous system would send signals to increase the heart rate, decrease salivation, and increase respiration.
The somatic nervous system sends signals to the central nervous system to increase heart rate and respiration.
The sympathetic nervous system would send signals to increase the heart rate, decrease salivation, and increase respiration.
The autonomic nervous system would send signals to the somatic nervous system to increase respiration and heart rate.
Alcohol addiction is a condition in which a person experiencesdependent on alcohol and difficult to control its consumption. On the other hand, excessive alcohol consumption in the long term can cause disturbances in brain performance, including disturbances in memory, attention, coordination, and locomotion. How does alcohol affect the functioning of nerve cells and the central nervous system? What is the mechanism that occurs? Based on information from the literature, analyze what will happen to coordination and locomotion in someone who is addicted to alcohol and consumes large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time.
