Could an experiment similar to Young’s two-slit experiment be performed with sound? How might It be carried out? Does it matter that sound waves are longitudinal and
What could happen if Young’s double slit experiment is carried out with sound.
Answer to Problem 1CQ
Young’s Double Slit Experiment is based on interference. It is independent on the nature of waves. Whether it is longitudinal or transverse.
Explanation of Solution
Young’s Double Slit Experiment is based on Interference of waves. Waves can be any type sound waves, gravity waves, and even waves in water. It is easily known that two coherent waves will interfere either constructively or destructively based on the path and phase difference of waves. It is not depending on the character of waves whether it is longitudinal or transverse.
Even water waves also show interference patterns. This is similar to that of pattern made by light during interference.
