Chapter 26, Problem 26.6CR
Summary Introduction

To explain: The reason for abandoning of the five kingdom classification system for a three-domain system.

Concept introduction:

Organisms are classified into different taxa or groups based on their genetic data or morphology. A taxon is a single or a group of organisms that are placed in one category. Earlier, biologists placed the organism into the five kingdom system. These are Monera, Protista, Plantae, Fungi, and Animalia. Monera were classified as prokaryotes in the five kingdom classification system. Protista consists of a diverse kingdom that consists of unicellular organisms. But, soon the three domain system came into existence based on information obtained from genetic data. These three domain system includes Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya.
