Introduction: The geological timescale is divided into four eons: the Hadean, the Archaean, Proterozoic and Phanerozoic. The Phanerozoic eon is subdivided into three eras, namely the Paleozoic, the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic.
The Paleozoic era is subdivided into six periods: Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian. The Mesozoic era is divided into three periods, namely the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. The Cenozoic era is divided into two periods, Tertiary and Quaternary.
