An amusement park studied methods for decreasing the waiting time (minutes) for rides by loading and unloading riders more efficiently. Two alternative loading/unloading methods have been proposed. To account for potential differences due to the type of ride and the possible interaction between the method of loading and unloading and the type of ride, a factorial experiment was designed. Use the following data to test for any significant effect due to the loading and unloading method, the type of ride, and interaction. Use = .05. Factor A is method of loading and unloading; Factor B is the type of ride.

New "closed loop" (CL) devices have been developed to help to suppress overactive brain activity in patients with conditions such as Parkinson's disease and epilepsy.† The CL device is implanted directly into a specific area of the brain, and one of the key advantages is that it can immediately apply a treatment in reaction to heightened brain activity. This may help to reduce the duration of seizures and other periods of uncontrolled movement in patients.
A study was conducted on the effectiveness of the CL device on brain activity in rats. First, each of seven rats was observed for 15 minutes with the CL device implanted but not activated (OFF). The percentage of the time that each rat was moving was recorded. Then, after each CL device was activated (CL), the percentage of the time that the rat was moving was recorded over another 15-minute period.
The OFF and CL data values given in the accompanying table are approximated from a graph in the research article. The calculated…
At what age do babies learn to crawl? Does it take longer to learn in the winter when babies are often bundled in clothes that restrict their movement? Data were collected from parents who brought their babies into the University of Denver Infant Study Center to participate in one of a number of experiments between 1988 and 1991. Parents reported the birth month and the age at which their child was first able to creep or crawl a distance of four feet within one minute. The resulting data were grouped by month of birth. The data are for January, May, and September

Researchers have observed that infected fish spend excessive time near the water surface, where they may be more vulnerable to bird predation. Researchers set up an experiment in a large outdoor tank that stocked with three kinds of killifish, uninfected, lightly infected, and highly infected, and recorded the number of fish that is eaten by birds. Twenty, two-month-old rats are randomly selected from a pool of one thousand two-month-old rat pups. Ten of the twenty pups are exposed to an enriched environment for three weeks and the other ten to the usual environment for the same period of time. At a suitable time after the exposure, the psychologist measures the number of neurons per cm3 in each rat's brain. A comparison is then made of the mean number of neurons per cm3 for each group.a. Because of mire expensive machinery requirements, method B will only be adopted if it is significantly shorter than method A by more than a minute. In the study, mice were randomly assigned to live in an enriched environment (EE), a standard environment (SE), or an impoverished environment (IE) for several weeks. Only the enriched environment provided opportunities for exercise. Half the mice then remained in their home cage (HC) as control groups while half were subjected to stress (SD) by being placed repeatedly with a very aggressive mouse. All the mice in SD exhibited acute signs of stress during these brief exposures to ‘‘mouse bullies.” The researchers were interested in how resilient the mice were in recovering from the stress after the mouse bullying stopped.1Immunological EffectsIn addition to the behavioral effects of stress, the researchers studied several immunological effects of stress. One measure studied is stress-induced decline in FosB-positive cells in the FosB/ΔFosA expression. This portion of the study only…arrow_forward
- Least squares regression analysis is a common method for modelling trip generation. What are the main assumptions of the least squares regression analysis in that context? Discuss with examples the consequences of violating two of these assumptions.arrow_forwardWe try a last model class to find the perfect model for the Titanic data-set: An SVM. The SVM is a model class that is very sensitive to hyper-parameter tuning. Especially, the cost parameter C and the bandwidth of the RBF kernel λ must be optimally adjusted in order to obtain a sensible model. We use a nested resampling strategy to perform this hyper-parameter tuning: At first, 33% of the data are laid aside as an external test set, to validate the result of the hyper-parameter tuning itself (the outer resampling strategy). We use a random search as the tuning algorithm with a budget of 100 iterations. As parameter spaces, we use all positive real numbers for both C and λ. The performance of a single hyper-parameter setting is evaluated using a 10-fold cross validation (the inner resampling strategy). Moreover, in order to speed up the entire tuning process, we utilise parallel computing.Which of the following statements are correct?a) Using a nested resampling is necessary in order to…arrow_forwardThe viruses causing problems in strawberry plants are mainly spread by one insect, the strawberry aphid. Carly believes that as aphids feed on leaves, they transmit viruses that can cause a rapid decrease in plant growth. She decides to verify whether or not the number of strawberry aphids found on a plant could be linked to its growth. She therefore randomly chooses 5 strawberry plants at the same stage of development in a virus-infested garden. For each individual plant, she first collects all the aphids present on the plant and weighs them, and then weighs the entire plant to have a measure of plant growth. She obtains the following data. (Attach on side) Is Carly correct in thinking that when the number of aphids on a plant is larger, the growth of the plant is affected (i.e., its weight is smaller)? Apply the appropriate statistical method with a test of significance at α = 0.05.arrow_forward
