A singly ionized (one electron removed) 40K atom passes through a velocity selector consisting of uniform perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. The selector is adjusted to allow ions having a speed of 4.50 km/s to pass through undefiected when the magnetic field is 0.0250 T. The ions next enter a second uniform magnetic field (B') oriented at right angles to their velocity. 40K contains 19 protons and 21 neutrons and has a mass of 6.64 × 10−26 kg. (a) What is the magnitude of the electric field in the velocity selector? (b) What must be the magnitude of B' so that the ions will be bent into a semicircle of radius 12.5 cm?

An Introduction to Thermal Physics
- A proton (charge + e, mass mp), a deuteron (charge + e, mass 2mp), and an alpha particle (charge +2e, mass 4mp) are accelerated from rest through a common potential difference V. Each of the particles enters a uniform magnetic field B, with its velocity in a direction perpendicular to B. The proton moves in a circular path of radius rp. In terms of rp, determine (a) the radius rd of the circular orbit for the deuteron and (b) the radius ra for the alpha particle.arrow_forwardAn electron is accelerated through 2.40 103 V from rest and then enters a uniform 1.70-T magnetic field. What are (a) the maximum and (b) the minimum values of the magnetic force this particle experiences?arrow_forward, A proton, deuteron, and an alpha-particle ae all accelerated from rest through the same potential difference. They then enter the same magnetic field, moving perpendicular to it. Compute the ratios of the radii of their circular paths. Assume that md= 2wmp and ma= 4mp.arrow_forward
- A proton (charge +e, mass mp), a deuteron (charge +e, mass 2mp), and an alpha particle (charge +2e, mass 4mp) are accelerated from rest through a common potential difference V. Each of the particles enters a uniform magnetic field B, with its velocity in a direction perpendicular to B. The proton moves in a circular path of radius p. In terms of p, determine (a) the radius rd of the circular orbit for the deuteron and (b) the radius r for the alpha particle.arrow_forwardA long, straight, horizontal wire carries a left-to-right current of 20 A. If the wire is placed in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 4.0105 T that is directed vertically downward, what is tire resultant magnitude of the magnetic field 20 cm above the wire? 20 cm below the wire?arrow_forwardA cosmic-ray proton in interstellar space has an energy of 10.0 MeV and executes a circular orbit having a radius equal to that of Mercury’s orbit around the Sun (5.80 × 1010 m). What is the magnetic field in that region of space?arrow_forward
- A circular coil of radius 5.0 cm is wound with five turns and carries a current of 5.0 A. If the coil is placed in a uniform magnetic field of strength 5.0 T, what is the maximum torque on it?arrow_forwardAssume the region to the right of a certain plane contains a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 1.00 mT and the field is zero in the region to the left of the plane as shown in Figure P22.71. An electron, originally traveling perpendicular to the boundary plane, passes into the region of the field. (a) Determine the time interval required for the electron to leave the field-filled region, noting that the electrons path is a semicircle. (b) Assuming the maximum depth of penetration into the field is 2.00 cm, find the kinetic energy of the electron.arrow_forwardTwo long wires, one of which has a semicircular tend of radius R, are positioned as shown in the accompanying figure. If both wires carry a current I, how far apart must then parallel sections be so that the net magnetic field at P is zero? Does the current in the straight wire flow up or down?arrow_forward
- Consider an electron rotating in a circular orbit of radius r. Show that the magnitudes of the magnetic dipole moment and the angular momentum L of the electron are related by: = L=e2marrow_forwardWhen the current through a circular loop is 6.0 A, the magnetic field at its center is 2.0104 T. What is the radius of the loop?arrow_forwardWhy is the following situation impossible? Figure P28.46 shows an experimental technique for altering the direction of travel for a charged particle. A particle of charge q = 1.00 C and mass m = 2.00 1015 kg enters the bottom of the region of uniform magnetic field at speed = 2.00 105 m/s, with a velocity vector perpendicular to the field lines. The magnetic force on the particle causes its direction of travel to change so that it leaves the region of the magnetic field at the top traveling at an angle from its original direction. The magnetic field has magnitude B = 0.400 T and is directed out of the page. The length h of the magnetic field region is 0.110 m. An experimenter performs the technique and measures the angle at which the particles exit the top of the field. She finds that the angles of deviation are exactly as predicted.
