Chapter 27, Problem 27.45AP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The advantages and disadvantages of having full genetic information about a baby should be determined.

Concept Introduction:

  • Gene is the biological unit of heredity which holds the information to build and maintain their cells and pass genetic traits to offspring. In cells, a gene is a portion of DNA.
  • Genome is the full complement of genetic information in a cell, and contains the program required for that cell to function.
  • Genome mapping is based on the use of genetic techniques (techniques include cross- breeding experiments, the examination of family histories…) to construct maps showing the positions to genes and other sequence features on a genome.

Suppose that you could undergo genetic testing at age 18 for susceptibility to a genetic disease that would not appear until middle age and has no available treatment. a. What would be some of the possible reasons for having such a genetic test and some of the possible reasons for not having the test? b. Would you personally want to be tested? Explain your reasoning.
