Chapter 27.1, Problem 2RA

a.

Summary Introduction

To explain: The way in which the yield of C3 plants grown in high CO2 levels.

Introduction: C3 photosynthesis occurs in the plants bundle sheath cells fixing carbon dioxide (CO2) from air to produce three-carbon compound which enters Calvin cycle. In C4 photosynthesis which occurs in mesophyll cells and bundle sheath cells fixes CO2 producing a four-carbon molecule which further enters Calvin cycle. Carbon dioxide is essential for the process of photosynthesis by plants. The elevated CO2 level could influence C4 and C3 photosynthesis which in turn affects plant growth and crop yields. The crops require higher amounts of soil nutrients to benefit from increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

b.

Summary Introduction

To determine: The condition in which C4 plants benefit more with high CO2 levels.

c.

Summary Introduction

To construct: An argument elucidating both answers.
