Chapter 27.6, Problem 2MC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The data that led the researchers conclude that whales cannot taste umami, sweet, bitter, or sour.

Concept introduction:

The taste genes of the whale are present in the cell membrane of the taste receptors cells. These cells contain the protein which is encoded by the taste genes. There are two types of taste genes present in the whales that are T1R (taste receptor type 1) an T2R (taste receptor type 2). The T1R encode for the umami, and sweet taste receptors, and T2R encodes for the bitter taste receptor.

DeCasper and Fifer (1980) provided evidence that babies recognize their mothers' voices shortly after birth. Using a nonnutritive nipple attached to a sensing apparatus, DeCasper and Fifer showed that newborns would suck more to hear a tape of their mother's voice compared to a tape of a stranger's voice. Because they were newborns, they must have become familiar with the mother's voice while still in the womb. In a follow-up study, DeCasper and Spence had 16 pregnant mothers read a three minute long passage from the Dr. Seuss book The Cat in the Hat to their fetuses twice a day for the last 6.5 weeks of pregnancy. The mothers were also recorded reading three minute excerpts from two other stories. By the time the babies were born, the researchers calculated, they had heard The Cat in the Hat for about 5 hours. DeCasper and Spence used their sucking test again. The babies sucked more to hear The Cat in the Hat, regardless of whether it was in their mother's voice or another woman's…
Many people like to eat spicy foods, but most other mammals don’t. Historically, the general trend was that the hotter the climate, the spicier the foods a society traditionally favored. Using these facts as a starting point, what might be the selective advantage for plants that can manufacture spicy chemicals? Why might it be useful for humans to tolerate, and even enjoy, spicy food?
Which is the best possible hypothesis for explaining changes in cortical robusticity over time? a.) The decrease in cortical robusticity associated with the appearance of modern humans was rapid and dramatic and resulted in more lightly constructed skeletons. b.) The increase in cortical robusticity associated with the appearance of modern humans was gradual and resulted in larger brain size coupled with a greater ability to deal with predators l. c.) The decrease in cortical robusticity associated with the appearance of archaic Homo sapiens is a part of a long term trend beginning with australopithecines and ending with modern Homo sapiens. d.) None if these statements are an appropriate hypothesis for changes seen in cortical robusticity.
