Chapter 27.7, Problem 18P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The mechanism for the base-catalysed polymerization of caprolactam has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

Polymers:

Monomers combine together to form polymers. Monomers are the repeating units of small molecules which link together to form polymers and the process is called as polymerization.

Two types of polymers:

  • Synthetic and biopolymers.
  • DNA is an example for biopolymer and these types of polymers are synthesized by cells.
  • Polymers synthesized by scientists are called synthetic polymers and some examples are nylon, polyester etc.

Polyamides:

  • Nylon is a polyamide and is formed from the polymerization of 6-aminohexanoic acid and hence it is called nylon-6.
  • Caprolactam is used as the starting material for the commercial synthesis of nylon 6
  • Polyamide belongs to the class of step-growth polymer.
