Pump gasoline may contain a small amount of alcohol.

In engines, a permissible amount of alcohol in gasoline fuel is present. According to the society of automotive engineers (SAE), the presence of alcohol in gasoline should be up to 10%. The effects on different vehicles and engines will vary if a higher amount of alcohol is used. There are some common problems that can occur if the amount of alcohol is more than the required limit. Some of them are:

  1. Alcohol is very corrosive in nature. When it comes in contact with certain materials such as rubber compounds, zinc and aluminum alloys in carburetors, in fuel storage, and delivery systems, it can cause harm to them.
  2. Alcohol acts as a solvent in gasoline, but if used in a greater amount, it dissolves varnish and other deposits in the fuel tank, which are carried to the carburetor where it blocks small orifices in the system.
  3. In a fuel system, alcohol dries out the rubber component which results in the cracking and can brittle fuel lines and seals.
