Question
Chapter 28, Problem 28.59AP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The term axon and its role in nerve transmission have to be explained briefly.
Concept Introduction:
- Neurotransmitters: Neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit messages from the nervous system to the target cell. They are the chemical messagers where the electrical signal from the nervous system is travelled from one neuron to another to reach the target cell.
- The signals that are transmitted are released from the nerve cells called neurons.
- Neurons have a bulb like structure with long and slim stem called axon.
- The end of the axon and the bulbous end have many tentacle-like extensions called dendrites.
- The small gap between the target cell and the tip of the neuron near to the target cell are called synapse.
- Impulses are conducted from dendrites of neuron to another through the axon.
