Fixing a Radio. You and your team are stranded on a tropical island that hosts a deserted military base. In your
efforts to get rescued, you find a radio. However, when you power it up some lights turn on, but the radio does not
transmit or receive. You open up the back cover and quickly identify the problem: There is a burnt resistor on the
circuit board. You have located some basic electronics tools and supplies, but the charred resistor is unidentifiable,
so you do not know what to use for its replacement. There is a crude schematic on the inside of the cover of the
radio, but it only gives the value of the current through the part of the circuit with the burnt resistor. You sketch the
circuit with all the elements you can identify (see drawing). Assume V₁ = 2.2 V and V₂ = 2.8 V.

- Your laptop has wireless communications connectivity, and you might even have a wireless keyboard or mouse. But there’s one wire you haven’t been able to get rid of yet—the power cord.Researchers are working on ways to circumvent the need for a direct electrical connection for power, and they are experiencing some success. Recently, investigators were able to use current flowing through a primary coil to power a 60 W lightbulb connected to a secondary coil 2.0 m away, with approximately 15% efficiency. The coils were large and the efficiency low, but it’s a start. The wireless power transfer system is outlined in Figure VI.2. An AC supply generates a current through the primary coil, creating a varying magnetic field. This field induces a current in the secondary coil, which is connected to a resistance (the lightbulb) and a capacitor that sets the resonance frequency of the secondary circuit to…arrow_forwardQ17arrow_forwardA2arrow_forward

- A rail gun uses electromagnetic forces to accelerate a projectile to very high velocities. The basic mechanism of acceleration is relatively simple and can be illustrated in the following example. A metal rod of mass 40.0 g and electrical resistance 0.300 Ω rests on parallel horizontal rails that have negligible electric resistance. The rails are a distance L = 9.00 cm apart. (Figure 1)The rails are also connected to a voltage source providing a voltage of V = 5.00 V .The rod is placed in a vertical magnetic field. The defendant likes to do installations and repairs himself and has done a sloppy job of installing the light fixture. The fixture hangs vertically from a single wire that is attached through the porch ceiling and down the wall to one connector in a nearby electrical outlet. The second wire is hung horizontally with strings at the level of the light and then runs down the wall to the other connector in the outlet.
