Summary Introduction

The biogeochemical cycle of iron is referred to as iron cycle. Iron present in wide range of oxidation states (-2 to +7). But, on earth, it is chiefly existing in its +2 or +3 redox state. Thus, iron cycle refers to cycling of iron between its +2 to +3 oxidation states. This mechanism can be abiotic or enabled by microbes. For example, the rusting of iron (Fe2+ is abiotically oxidized to Fe3+ by means of oxygen. Subsequently, the abiotic reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by biological cycling of Fe2+ oxidizing microorganisms or by iron-sulfide minerals.
