Introduction:
Meninges are the protective covering of the central nervous system such as the brain and the spinal cord. Inflammation of the meninges is referred to as meningitis. Neisseria meningitidis is also referred to as meningococcus which is the causative agent of infectious meningitis. It is a gram-negative, obligate, aerobic coccus bacterium. Its size ranges about 0.6-1.0 μm in diameter. Meningitis is characterized by the sudden onset of headache which was accompanied by stiff neck and vomiting and could progress to coma and death within a day.
