To determine:
The levels of mercury found in catfish, salmon, light meat tuna, and white meat tuna and explain the reason that different species contain different levels of mercury.
Introduction:
The U.S Food and Drug Administration suggests that pregnant and breastfeeding mother should avoid eating fishes like white tuna, shark, and swordfish. These particular fishes often contain a high concentration of mercury, which can affect the developing of fetus and infants. Mercury becomes a health problem through biological magnification. Biological magnification represents a process by which toxic substances become concentrated in animals occupying high trophic levels.

What is the most logical explanation for its death?arrow_forwardA two-month old child was admitted to hospital after failure to thrive. The “boy”, whose external genitalia were ambiguous, was found to have elevated blood pressure, but no dehydration. The following measurements were made on a plasma sample taken on admission: Variable Result Reference Range Urea (mM) 6.2 2.5 - 7.0 Creatinine (μM) 95 60 - 120 Glucose (mM) 4.3 3.5 - 5.5. A chromosome analysis showed that the child was a genotypic female (46, XX karyotype). A consultant obstetrician initially diagnosed congenital adrenal hyperplasia, however they were confused by the…arrow_forwardWhy is ammonia not used as a nitrogenous waste compound in terrestrial animals? a)Ammonia is highly toxic, and to minimize that toxicity it must be excreted in large volumes of water. b)Urea and uric acid both have more nitrogen atoms than ammonia, making them more efficient at c)Ammonia is used by reptiles and birds, because it is less toxic to developing embryos than urea. d)Ammonia has more free energy than urea, so ammonia waste is converted to urea to capture some of that free energy.arrow_forward
- A 13 month old boy was admitted to a small rural hospital. He had been in a normal state of health until 10 days prior, at which time he had developed an upper respiratory tract infection. He experienced increasing problems with his balance and became lethargic. These symptoms prompted his mother to seek medical attention at the hospital where pertinent laboratory results at admission showed a serum glucose level of 23 mg/dL and moderate ketones in the urine and serum. An intravenous solution of 5% dextrose was initiated to correct the low glucose level. Because the clinical picture resembled Reye’s syndrome, the child was transferred to a medical center hospital for a definitive diagnosis. Laboratory results on admission to the medical center hospital.
