Concept explainers
Suppose you exert a horizontal push on a crate that rests on a level floor and it doesn’t move. How much friction acts compared with your push?
The friction force acting on a crate compared with the pushing force.
Answer to Problem 12RQ
The magnitude of friction force exerted on the crate is equal to the magnitude of pushing force on the crate but the direction of friction force is opposite to direction of pushing force.
Explanation of Solution
When a crate is pushed such that it doesn’t move, then the net force on it will be zero.
Write the expression for net force.
Here,
Fp is the pushing force
Ff is the friction force
The negative sign indicates that the direction of forces is opposite to each other.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the magnitude of friction force exerted on the crate is equal to the magnitude of pushing force on the crate but the direction of friction force is opposite to the direction of pushing force.
