Chapter 3, Problem 29P
To defog the rear window of an automobile, a very thin transparent heating element is attached to the inner surface of the window. A uniform heat flux of 1300 page 221 W/m2 is provided to the heating element for defogging a rear window with thickness of 5 mm. The interior temperature of the automobile is 22°C, and the convection heat transfer coefficient is 15 Wm2 K. The outside ambient temperature is -5°C, and the convection heat transfer coefficient is 100 W/m2 ⋅K. If the thermal conductivity of the window is 1.2 W mK, determine the inner surface temperature of the window.

In an experiment to measure the thermal conductivity of a plate of unknown material with area 1 m2 and thickness 0.1m, one of its surfaces is maintained at 100 °C and the other at 20 °C and a heat at the rate of 100 kW was supplied across it. Determine the thermal conductivity of the hot plate. Is the material metallic, non-metallic, or gas/liquid?
A 2 m X 1.5 m section of wall of an industrial furnace burning gas is not insulated, and the temperature at the outer surface of this section is measured to be 80oC. The temperature of the furnace room is 30oC, and the combined convection and radiation heat transfer coefficient at the surface of the outer furnace is 10 w/oC. It is proposed to insulate this section of the furnace wall with glass wool insulation (K=0.038 W/moC) in order to reduce the heat loss by 90 percent. Assuming the outer surface temperature of the section remains at about 80oC, determine i) the thickness of the insulation that is needed and ii) the outer surface temperature of the insulation after installation.
A hot surface at 100°C is to be cooled by attaching3-cm-long, 0.25-cm-diameter aluminum pin fins (k = 237 W/m·K) to it, with a center-to-center distance of 0.6 cm. Thetemperature of the surrounding medium is 30°C, and the heattransfer coefficient on the surfaces is 35 W/m2·K. Determine therate of heat transfer from the surface for a 1-m * 1-m sectionof the plate. Also determine the overall effectiveness of the fins.
