Concept Introduction:
The effect of temperature on plastics is complex in nature. When heated, plastics become flexible before finally melting. However, upon cooling it can regain its rigidity and may become hard yet brittle. This is due to the present of amorphous and crystalline regions. Amorphous regions represent the phase when the polymeric chains are not arranged in an organized manner. Similarly, crystalline regions represent the phase when polymeric chains are well organized. A crystalline plastic may transit from strictly crystalline to amorphous state under constant heating.
