A community of 100,000 people wants to initiate public garbage collection and disposal to a landfill that is 30 miles away. The collection frequency is once a week. For garbage transportation to the landfill, there are two options: no transfer station and a transfer station that is 10 miles away from the community and is on the way to the landfill. Determine:
Total transportation cost for the no transfer station option.
Total transportation cost for the transfer station option.
Breakeven point (for the two options), if the transfer station can be placed anywhere on the way to the landfill. Your answer must be in term of distance between the station and the community.
Assumptions/given information:
Generation rate: 4 lbs/person/day.
As collected density: 200 lb/yd3.
Collection truck size of 20 yd3 with a compaction ratio of 3.
Transfer truck/trailer size of 60 yd3 with no compaction capability.
Costs: 30 cents per mile per collection truck, 10 cents per mile per transfer…

Solid waste from a park is to be collected in large containers. It is estimated that the average time to
drive from the garbage to the first container t, and from the last container t₂ to the garbage each day
will be 15 and 20 minutes, respectively. If the average time required to drive between the containers
is 360 seconds and the two-way distance to the disposal site is 50 km (speed limit 88 km/hr), determine
the number of containers that can be emptied per day, based on an 8-hour work day.
Note: at 88 km/hr speed, a = 0.016, b= 0.011; S = 0.133, W = 0.15; Pc+U= 0.4 h/trip.
