Antlion larvae lie in wait for prey at the bottom of a conical pit about 5.0 cm deep and 3.8 cm in radius. When a small insect ventures into the pit, it slides to the bottom and is seized by the antlion. If the prey attempts to escape, the antlion rapidly launches grains of sand at the prey, either knocking it down or causing a small avalanche that returns the prey to the bottom of the pit. Suppose an antlion launches grains of sand at an angle of 72° above the horizon. Find the launch speed v0 required to hit a target at the top of the pit, 5.0 cm above and 3.8 cm to the right of the antlion.

- Georgia, standing on the back of the pick-up truck, wants to throw her last piece of balut to her mortal enemy, Emma. before the truck started moving, the two women are separated by a distance of 2 m. For two seconds, the truck uniformly accelerated until it reached a velocity of 4 m/s which it then maintained. With hatred, Georgia throws the last piece of balut with a velocity of 12.5 m/s at an angle of 40° from horizontal, measured relative to the truck. If she makes the throw 2.8 seconds after the truck started moving, will she be able to hit Emma? Note that Emma is at rest due to exhaustion from their earlier fight and she cannot dodge the balut. Set your origin at point A. Neglect air resistance.arrow_forwardFor a typical foul shot, the rim center is 4.2 m horizontally and 1 meter above where the ball is last touched; ball duration in the air is 1.00 seconds before rim contact.arrow_forwardA projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 1000 m/s at an angle of 370 above the horizontal. If air is neglected, the horizontal component of the projectile's velocity after 20 s is: O 16 m/s O 640 m/s O 800 m/s O 600 m/sarrow_forward
- A plate slides off the edge of a kitchen table with an initial velocity of 3 m/s horizontally. The height of the tabletop above the ground is 4.0 m. (neglect the air resistance) a) what is the range of the projectile? b) What is the velocity (including both the horizontal and vertical components) of the plate just before it hits the ground and shatters into multiple pieces?arrow_forwardAn elliptipool is an elliptical pool table with only one pocket. A pool shark places a ball on the table, hits it in what appears to be a random directon, and yet it bounces off the edge, falling directly into the pocket. Explain why this happens.arrow_forwardAn old Biblical story tells of David, a small warrior engaged in man-to-man combat with Goliath, a much larger adversary. In the story, David uses a sling to increase the speed of a projectile (in this case a rock), striking Goliath in the forehead and killing him. O The type of sling often used in such combat consists of a long strip of cloth with a pouch halfway down its length. The rock is positioned in the pouch, with the warrior holding both ends of the sling. By whirling the sling in a horizontal circle, a warrior can release one end of the sling, thereby allowing the projectile to fly in a straight line at high speed. Historically, warriors and hunters typically used a vertical circle, but the circle used here is horizontal for simplicity. In this problem, assume that the sling, when unfolded, was roughly R = 5.54 ft in total length and that the rock weighed a half a pound. If David whirled the sling such that the sling was at an angle 0 = 4.73° below the horizontal, with what…arrow_forward
- A mortar is like a small cannon that launches shells at steep angles. A mortar crew is positioned near the top of a steep hill. Enemy forces are charging up the hill and it is necessary for the crew to spring into action. Angling the mortar at an angle of 0 65.0° (as shown), the crew fires the shell at a muzzle velocity of 148 ft/s. How far d down the hill does the shell strike if the hill d subtends an angle o = 37.0° from the horizontal? Ignore air friction. d = How long will the mortar shell remain in the air? time: S How fast will the shell be traveling when it hits the ground? speed: m/sarrow_forwardAn old Biblical story tells of David, a small warrior engaged in man-to-man combat with Goliath, a much larger adversary. - You need to get into your fourth-floor apartment, but you have forgotten your key to the main ground floor door of the building. You call up to your lazy roommate to come down and let you in, but he says he will throw the keys down to you instead. The window that he throws the keys out of is 13 meters above the ground, and he chucks them with a speed of 2m/s at an angle of 20 degrees above horizontal. The acceleration due to gravity near the surface of earth is 9.8 m/s?. How far back from the window do you need to stand to catch the keys?arrow_forwardTwo identical objects with the same initial speed collide and stick together. If the composite object moves with half the initial speed of either object, what was the angle between the initial velocities? 20° O 30° 450 60° 120°arrow_forwardWhen serving, a beach volleyball player strikes the volleyball (mass = 265 g) at a height of 2.4 metres above the ground. The ball follows the standard path of a projectile, first rising as it passes over the net, and then descending. The opponent receives the volleyball 1.1 seconds later at the same height (2.4 metres above the ground), and at a horizontal distance of 13.5 metres from the server. Answer the following questions assuming there is no effect of air resistance. When the ball was received by the opponent, the horizontal component of velocity (in m/s) was? The vertical component of velocity at take-off and impact (in m/s) can be solved by recognizing that the vertical component of velocity at the point of maximum height in the trajectory of motion is (in m/s)?arrow_forward
