Chapter 3, Problem 5CT
Luke started a training program at the beginning of the summer. For the first week, he jogged 1 mile. Each week after that, he increased the distance he jogged by about 0.5 mile and increased his speed. At the end of 2 months, he was able to jog 4.5 miles each day at a faster pease than he had been able to jog at the beginning of the summer. During the −month period, the muscle cells in his heart and his legs increased in size. Identify a critical membrane-bound organelle that increased a number and made it possible for Luke to run the longer distance. Also, explain how these organelles increased in number, and describe the location of the gentic code for the proteins in the organelles.

You have been asked to do a strucutural study to understand how increasing cell surface area affects cell size, cell shape and functions. What cell type would help you most efficiently observe the effects of increasing surface area?
Choices:
A. Monocytes from the blood serum. Monocytes are largely roughly spherical cells.
B. Red Blood cells from the bone marrow. The shape of Red blood cells is a biconcave disk and looks like a donut.
C. Stem cells from skin. In this case assume a skin stem cell is flat and plate like.
D. Microvilli covered cells from the intestines. Microvilli are tiny hair like protrusions in the plasma membrane of intestinal cells that increase the absorption of nutrients in the intestines.
Which of the following statements about cell division and cells is true?
a)
Adults have much larger cells than children, and adults have many more cells than children.
b)
Adults and children have cells that are about the same size, and both children and adults have about the same number of cells.
c)
Adults and children have cells that are about the same size, but adults have many more cells than children.
d)
Adults have much larger cells than children, but both children and adults have about the same number of cells.
Discuss the importance of Stem Cells.
How does the scientists harvest the stem cells in our body?
Differentiate the embryonic stem cells and the adult stem cells
