The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 61GP

The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon is 1.91m/s2 .

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Height of the ball on the moon, hm=35m

Height of the ball on the earth, he=180m

Formula Used:

Let the gravitational acceleration on earth is ge and the gravitational acceleration on moon is gm . Since the launch angle and the velocity is same in both the cases. Consider the second law of motion to calculate the acceleration on the moon.

u2=v2+2gmhm    … (1)

Where,

  u is the initial velocity.

  v is the final velocity.

Write the expression to calculate the acceleration on the earth using second law of motion.

u2=v2+2gehe    … (2)

Calculation:

Since, the initial velocity is zero. Solve equation (1).

0=v2+2gmhmv2=2gmhm

Substitute the value of v2 in equation (2) and solve.

0=2gmhm+2gehegmhm=gehegm=gehehm

Substitute all the values in the above expression.

gm=(9.8m/s2)(35m)180m=1.91m/s2

Conclusion:

Thus, the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon is 1.91m/s2 .
