Concept explainers
EVOLUTION CONNECTION This chapter explains how the emergent properties of water contribute to the suitability of the environment for life. Until fairly recently, scientists assumed that other physical requirements for life included a moderate range of temperature, pH, atmospheric pressure, and salinity, as well as low levels of toxic chemicals. That view has changed with the discovery of organisms known as extremophiles, which have been found flourishing in hot, acidic sulfur springs, around hydrothermal vents deep in the ocean, and in soils with high levels of toxic metals. Why would astrobiologists be interested in studying extremophiles? What does the existence of life in such extreme environments say about the possibility of life on other planets?

- compare and contrast between hypertonic, isotonic and hypotonic solutions and include an image that correctly represents each of these possible cellular tonicities illustrating the movement of water.arrow_forwardAs surface water in a lake cools from 4 °C to 0 °C, the water expands and becomes less dense. Why is this change in the water beneficial to the organisms living in the lake? As the water cools to freezing, spaces form between water molecules, providing microhabitats for small organisms. Less dense water holds more dissolved compounds, keeping water from freezing so organisms survive winter. O Cooler water is less viscous than warmer water, making it easier for organisms to move through the water. O Frozen surface water insulates the water below it, maintaining a habitat where organisms can overwinter.arrow_forwardAside from hydration, pick two ways water's extraordinary properties affect living organisms. The cooling that occurs through evaporation of water helps to maintain an organism's body temperature. The only way that water affects living organisms is through hydration. The cooling that occurs through condensation of water helps to maintain an organism's body temperature. Cohesion allows for water to be drawn up a plant within its vascular tissue.arrow_forward

- i just answered a hw question that i was a little confused on. i answered it but am not fully sure if it's correct. so can you take a look at check if my answer is correct and if it's not, then a explaintion would be helpful. Would you expect water molecules to move faster when there is a HIGH concentration gradient or a LOW concentration gradient? Water molecules would move faster when there is a high concentration gradient because the pressure for the molecules in the high concentration to reach equilibrium increases since there are more molecules there than in the low concentration. So as the molecules move down the concentration gradient faster to equalize the concentration on both sides due to the increased pressure, the rate of diffusion increases.arrow_forwardDead organic matter commonly decomposes in a pattern that follows a negative exponential curve. Scientists wanted to compare the decomposition rates of leaves from cherry trees and maple trees. The scientists placed bags of leaves from each type of tree into a stream and retrieved the bags over time. The scientists repeated the experiment three times. The scientists calculated and graphed the mean amount of litter remaining of each leaf type at all time points. When plants decompose, the dead plant matter first leaches substances such as salts, sugars, and amino acids. After this leaching, one compound left behind is lignin. Lignin gives leaves their toughness and resists decomposition. Leaf mass remaining (grams) 1004 75+ 50- 25- O 25 50 75 Time (days) Maple Cherry 100 Select the statement the data support about the rate of leaf decomposition and the amount of lignin present in leaves. O Since the maple leaves decompose the slowest, they have a greater amount of lignin. O Since the…arrow_forwardList four biological processes on which water is an indispensable component.arrow_forward

As the number of the sheet increases so does its hardness. Which of the following makes the most sense based on the data? 100- 60 40- 20- 192 incubation time (hr) 72 96 240 100- 80- 60- 40- 20- b-Oo 8 10 12 extracellular osmotic pressure, MPa Figure 22.9 Penetration as a function of incubation time (A) and extracellular osmotic pressure (B). Numbers 1 to 6 in both panels indicate the substrate, with lower numbers being softer substrates. Percent penetration goes down over time and as substrate hardness increases. If penetration of a substrate occurs at a particular external pressure, this indicates that internal pressure is high enough to allow penetration of the particular substrate. Harder substrates are more easily penetrated when extracellular osmotic pressures are low. The…arrow_forward
