Concept explainers
Concept introduction:
Process costing systems is a system to assign the costs where the production goes through different processes. A product may take several processes to complete and when these processes are separable, the process costing system is applied to ascertain the cost of each process.
Weighted average method:
Weighted average method is one of the methods of process costing, under this method the cost of beginning work in process is mixed with the current period cost and weighted cost and equivalent units are calculated. In other words, the weighted average method does not teat the beginning work in process cost separately.
To choose:
The correct option for amounts combined when calculating the equivalent unit cost using the weighted average method

- Which is nor needed to compute equivalent units of production? A. the percentage of completion for inventory still in process B. the number of units transferred out C. the number of units started and completed D. the material cost per unitarrow_forwardWhich of the following is a conversion cost? A. raw materials B. direct labor C. sales commissions D. direct material usedarrow_forwardFor which cost concept used in applying (he cost-plus, approach to product pricing are fixed manufacturing costs, fixed selling and administrative expenses, and desired profit allowed for in determining the markup? A. Total cost B. Product cost C. Variable cost D. Standard costarrow_forward
- In what way do the cost of production summaries in Chapter 6, prepared using the weighted average cost method, differ from the cost of production summaries presented in Chapter 5? What is the reason for this difference?arrow_forwardUsing the costs listed in the previous problem, classify the costs as either product costs or period costs.arrow_forwardWhy are units shipped used to calculate the value-stream product cost?arrow_forward
- Under absorption costing, a unit of product includes which costs? A. direct material, direct labor, and manufacturing overhead B. direct material, direct labor, and variable manufacturing overhead C. direct material, direct labor, and fixed manufacturing overhead D. direct material, direct labor, and all variable manufacturing overheadarrow_forwardIn assigning costs to goods transferred out, how do the weighted average and FIFO methods differ?arrow_forwardThe following data show the units in beginning work in process inventory, the number of units started, the number of units transferred, and the percent completion of the ending work in process for conversion. Given that materials are added at the beginning of the process, what are the equivalent units for material and conversion costs for each quarter using the weighted-average method? Assume that the quarters are independent.arrow_forward
- The cost behavior patterns below are lettered A through H. The vertical axes of the graphs represent total dollars of expense, and the horizontal axes represent production in units, machine hours, or direct labor hours. In each case, the zero point is at the intersection of the two axes. Each graph may be used no more than once. Required: Select the graph that matches the lettered cost described here. a. Depreciation of equipmentthe amount of depreciation charged is computed based on the number of machine hours that the equipment was operated. b. Electricity billflat fixed charge, plus a variable cost after a certain number of kilowatt hours are used. c. City water billcomputed as follows: d. Depreciation of equipmentthe amount is computed by the straight-line method. e. Rent on a factory building donated by the citythe agreement calls for a fixed fee payment, unless 200,000 labor hours are worked, in which case no rent need be paid. f. Salaries of repair workersone repair worker is needed for every 1,000 machine hours or less (i.e., 0 to 1,000 hours requires one repair worker, 1,001 to 2,000 hours requires two repair workers, etc.).arrow_forwardAccumulating costs means that a. costs must be summed and entered on the income statement. b. each cost must be linked to some cost object. c. costs must be measured and tracked. d. costs must be allocated to units of production. e. costs have expired and must be transferred from the balance sheet to the income statement.arrow_forwardWhich of the following is the step in which materials, labor, and overhead are detailed? A. determining the units to which costs are assigned B. determining the equivalent units of production C. determining the cost per equivalent units D. allocating the costs to the units transferred out and the units partially completedarrow_forward
