Chapter 30, Problem 11TYU

SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY

Critics of GM foods have argued that foreign genes may disturb normal cellular functioning, causing unexpected and potentially harmful substances to appear inside cells. Toxic intermediary substances that normally occur in very small amounts may arise in larger amounts, or new substances may appear. The disruption may also lead to loss of substances that help maintain normal metabolism. If you were your nation’s chief scientific advisor, how would you respond to these criticisms?

What questions would you ask of scientists before deciding whether to approve the new crop? What scientific data would you want to see? Would you also consult nonscientists? Would you consider ethical, economic, and social factors?
Part of post a development of the genetically engineered foods (genetically modified organism or GMOs)? Think about the economic environmental benefits health risks, ecological effects, and social impact of their use. List some reasons for and against genetically engineering the foods we eat.
Watching the food evolution video, and reading the information on genetic engineering, choose a position on the topic either supporting or refuting the use of genetic engineering and genetically modified (GMO)foods. Provide specific examples from scientifically source to support your point of view.
