Textbook Question
Chapter 30, Problem 30.30P
An isoprene unit can be thought of as having a head and a tail. The “head” of the isoprene unit is located at the end of the chain nearest the branch point, and the “tail” is located at the end of the carbon chain farthest from the branch point. Most isoprene units are connected together in a “head-to-tail” fashion, as illustrated. For both lycopene (Problem 31.26), and squalene (Figure 31.9), decide which isoprene units are connected in a head-to-tail fashion and which are not.
These two isoprene units are
connected in head-tail fashion.

Mark off the isoprene units in lycopene and β-carotene. Can you detect a similarity in the way in which squalene, lycopene, and β-carotene are biosynthesized?
All sugars exhibit mutarotation, or the interconversion of the α and β anomeric forms using the open chain structure as an intermediate. The specific rotations of the α and β anomers of D-mannose are +29° and -17°, respectively. If either pure crystalline sample is dissolved in water and allowed to come to equilibrium, the observed specific rotation is now +14°. Based on these data, calculate the percent abundances of the α and β anomers (assume that the concentration of the open chain form is negligible).
Linolenic acid and stearidonic acid are omega-3 fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids that contain the first double bond located at C3, when numbering begins at the methyl end of the chain. Predict how the melting point of stearidonic acid compares with the melting points of linolenic and stearic acids. A current avenue of research is examining the use of soybean oil enriched in stearidonic acid as a healthier alternative to vegetable oils that contain fewer degrees of unsaturation.
