Concept explainers
To determine: The name of two groups of protists which are known to cause HABs in marine ecosystems.
Introduction: Protists are single-celled eukaryotic organisms consisting of protozoa, unicellular algae, and slime molds. Marine ecosystems such as salt marshes, intertidal zones, estuaries, lagoons, mangroves, and coral reefs consist of a rich source of nutrients and salt which is required for the growth of microorganisms.
To determine: The hazards posed by HABs for other marine organisms and humans.

- How does killing Anopheles mosquitoes affect the Plasmadium protists?arrow_forwardHow are diatoms and dinoflagellates used in monitoring water quality? Cite two (2) examples. What are zooxanthellae? Describe their role in symbiotic relationships.arrow_forwardWhy have molecular biologists sequenced the genomes of severalparasitic protists?arrow_forward
- Considering both habitat conditions and requirements for successful symbiosis, why should you be surprised that squid and the rumen of a cow have the exact same microbial symbiots?arrow_forwardRuminants (like cattle) are herbivores but lack the necessary enzymes to digest cellulose from plants. Part of the digestive tract of ruminants contains a microbial community that can break down cellulose. These microbes gain energy from the plant material, and byproducts of their metabolism provide the host with a source of Carbon and energy. What type of symbiosis does this relationship describe?arrow_forwardWhy might overwatering your plants make them more susceptible to infection by some kinds of heterotrophic protists?arrow_forward
- how could antibiotics designed to stop narrowly defined categories of infectious microbes be used to discover which organisms are mutualists and which are parasites or commensals in the termite gut?arrow_forwardWhat two microbes form a partnership in the lichen symbiosis? What are the benefits to both partners?arrow_forwardHow can you differentiate between Giardia sp. and Trypanosoma sp.? Describe at least two visible differences between these protists.arrow_forward
- All of the following pertain to archaeobacteria EXCEPT:(a) They include microbes that live in hot acidic environ-ments.(b) All are strict anaerobes.(c) They include microbes that live in extremely saltyenvironments.(d) All lack peptidoglycan in their cell walls.(e) They include microbes that reduce carbon to methanegas.arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements DOES NOT describe nitrogen fixing bacteria? A. Can be found only as a symbiotes associated with the root nodules of legumes. B. Maybe be present in soil. C. Converts atmospheric nitrogen to organic nitrogen. D.
