Every number bigger than one and less than 10 is a coefficient. There is an integer exponent.
The exponent is positive and equal to how many places the original decimal point has been pushed to the left when expressing values higher than 10 in scientific notation.
In scientific notation, exponents for numbers less than one are negative. The exponent's value is equal to how many places to the left the decimal has been pushed.
In the case of multiplication involved in scientific notation, the coefficients are multiplied while the exponents are added up.
