A transparent layer of water may consist of disease-causing microorganisms. A group of bacteria termed as “coliforms” are used as an indicator to check the presence of pathogens. Coliforms are preferred because they invade the gastrointestinal tract of humans and another group of animals. Fecal contamination can be identified by the presence of coliforms in water.
