Concept explainers
Geometric Mean The geometric mean is often used in business and economics for finding average rates of change, average rates of growth, or average ratios. To find the geometric mean of n values (all of which are positive), first multiply the values, then find the nth root of the product. For a 6-year period, money deposited in annual certificates of deposit had annual interest rates of 5.154%, 2.730%, 0.488%, 0.319%, 0.313%, and 0.268%. Identify the single percentage growth rate that is the same as the five consecutive growth rates by computing the geometric mean of 1.05154, 1.02730, 1.00488, 1.00319, 1.00313, and 1.00268.

- Find the mean hourly cost when the cell phone described above is used for 240 minutes.arrow_forwardEstimate the age of a newly discovered fossil for which the ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 is R=1/1014.arrow_forwardDepreciation Once a new car is driven away from the dealer, it begins to lose value. Each year, a car loses 10% of its value. This means that each year the value of a car is 90% of the previous year’s value. If a new car was purchased for $20,000, the value at the end of the first year would be $20000(0.90) and the value of the car after the end of the second year would be $20000(0.90)2. Complete the table shown below. What will be the value of the car at the end of the eighth year? Simplify the expression, to show the value in dollars.arrow_forward
- Botany A group of Tasmanian botanists have claimed that a Kings holly shrub, the only one of its species in the world, is also the oldest living plant. Using carbon-14 dating of charcoal found along with fossilized leaf fragments, they arrived at an age of 43,000 years for the plant, whose exact location in south-west Tasmania is being kept a secret. What percent of the original carbon-14 in the charcoal was present? Source: Science.arrow_forwardIn Example 11, during which year did the sales reach $180 billion?arrow_forward
