On earth, there are about 400,000 species of plants are present, surprisingly we consume only a few plants. Those we eat are all angiosperms. The majority of the plants we consume come from species that are grown in cultivation. Some of these cultivated species lost the capability to live and replicate on their own due to artificial selection. Modern agriculture is mainly based on a few species, which exhibits low genetic diversity and also involves in making crops that are vulnerable to microbial pathogen and pests.
