Chapter 32, Problem 1TC
In 1993, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established Emiquon National Wildlife Refuge to restore and protect wetland habitats. The Illinois and Spoon River confluence was restored to its original floodplain. In order to achieve this, hundreds of acres of farmland were flooded. What might be the positive and negative environmental impacts of flooding the confluence of these two rivers? What direct and indirect benefits could a project like this provide for the residents of central Illinois?

If we could prevent wastes from flowing from the Chesapeake Bay into the Atlantic Ocean, it would help preserve the health of the bay
A sizable amount of the nitrogen and phosphorus that enters the Chesapeake Bay originates from farms and other faraway sources, yet it is people living near the bay, such as oystermen and crabbers, who bear many of the negative impacts. Who do you believe should be responsible for addressing the problems posed by nutrient pollution? Should policies on this issuebe developed and enforced by state governments, the federal government, both, or neither? Explain the reasons for your answer.
what is the importance of the wetlands in protecting new Orleans? How were they destroyed?

- The U.S. Department of the Interior filed an environmental impact statement (EIS) with regard to its proposal to lease approximately eighty tracts of submerged land, primarily located off the coast of Louisiana, for oil and gas exploration. Adjacent to the proposed area is the greatest estuarine coastal marsh in the United States. This marsh provides rich nutrients for the Gulf of Mexico, the most productive fishing region of the country. The EIS focused primarily on oil pollution and its negative environmental effect. Three conservation groups contend that the EIS is insufficient in that it does not properly discuss alternatives. The government contends that (a) it need only provide a detailed statement of the alternatives, not a discussion of their environmental impact, and (b) the only alternatives the NEPA requires it to discuss are those which can be adopted and implemented by the agency issuing the impact statement.
