Chapter 32, Problem 8WIO
Summary Introduction
To calculate:
The body mass index using the formula given in the textbook and to discuss the changing of the body mass index.
Concept introduction:
BMI (body mass index) of a person is also known as the Quetelet index. BMI value is determined from the weight and height of a person. It is different for different individuals as each individual would have a different height mass ratio than others. BMI is expressed in Kg/m2 (pounds per square inches). According to BMI of an individual, the individual is characterized as “healthy”, “overweight”, or ‘underweight’.

BMI (body mass index) is obtained by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in metres) squared.
To determine your weight in kilograms, take your weight in pounds, and divide by 2.2.(There are approximately 2.2lbs in one kilogram)
Weight (kg):________________
To determine your height in meters, you first need to know your height in inches. There are 12 inches in a foot, so a 6 foot person, would be 72 inches tall. Someone who is 5’6” would be 66 inches tall. (5 x 12 then add 6).Once you have the height in inches, divide this value by 40 to convert to meters.(You can use google for this calculation)
Height (m):_________________
Body mass index Formula = Body weight (kg) / Height2(m)Calculate your (or someone else’s) BMI using the weight and height values above:
What is the importance of body mass index in the human body ?
